A reminder of the importance of the “right to work” checks.

14th August 2023

Employment law, Newbury, Berkshire.

Last week the Home Office announced that the fines for employing workers without the correct permission to work in the UK are going to increase significantly in 2024.

The new fines will be £45,000 per illegal worker (up from £15,000) for a first breach, up to £60,000 (previously £20,000).

There is an on-line service to check your worker’s permissions here: Use the Employer Checking Service – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

A formal consultation is also expected later this year regarding the “options to strengthen action against licensed businesses who are employing illegal workers”.

All businesses must ensure that they have a proper on-boarding process for new employees, checking these requirements and ensure job offers are conditional on the appropriate permissions. Contact us if you need help with any of these issues.
