AI and the Workforce: What Employers Need to Know

6th December 2024

Employment law, Newbury, Berkshire.

Wimbledon has announced that it will replace line judges with the AI ‘Hawk-Eye’ system for the next tennis championship. While acknowledging the importance of tradition (human judges have been employed for over 100 years!), Wimbledon stated that extensive testing had shown the electronic system to be more accurate than the human eye. This move highlights the growing trend of automation in the workplace and raises important considerations for employers.

Automation and the Workplace: Key Takeaways for Employers

As businesses increasingly adopt AI systems, it’s essential to approach changes thoughtfully and fairly. Here are three key considerations:

  •  Evaluate Before Acting: Carefully assess the performance and implications of automated systems before making workforce adjustments.
  • Handle Redundancies with Care: If automation reduces the need for manual work, this may create redundancy situations. Employers must ensure they follow fair procedures, from warning of the risk of redundancy to consulting fully to explore alternative employment opportunities to minimize risk.
  • Maintain Oversight and Human Expertise: Even with advanced technology, businesses should still retain sufficient human oversight to address potential system errors or failures and be aware of transparency issues.

Automation offers many advantages, but a balanced approach can help businesses navigate challenges effectively.
